Ball State’s mostly online (we call it low-residency) master’s degree in emerging media design and development was created for working professionals who want to manage and direct interdisciplinary teams that use advanced storytelling techniques to advance an organization.

You will gain skills in three key areas that are in high demand in the workforce: design thinking, human-computer interaction, and cross-platform storytelling. You will learn how to plan, develop, deploy, and test the effectiveness of communication design and stories.

What makes the EMDD program distinct is it's a hands-on, practical experience built around research and application. EMDD students spend their first year in course work and the second year working in our two labs. In the Creative Projects lab, students will work with community partners to create stories, which may include interactive installation projects, augmented reality experiences or social media campaigns (just to name a few of our projects). In the Applied Research Lab, students will perform usability and user experience research to better understand how innovations in digital storytelling engage audiences.
